Bed Adhesion Troubleshooting: Getting Prints to Stick Every Time

The First Layer Decides Everything

Most failed prints fail at the first layer. If the first layer doesn't stick, nothing else matters. Adhesion problems usually come down to four things: leveling, cleanliness, temperature, and surface type.

Level the Bed Correctly

Automatic bed leveling helps, but a manual check never hurts. The nozzle should grip a sheet of paper with light resistance at each corner and the center. Re-check leveling after moving the printer or changing nozzles.

Keep the Surface Clean

Oils from fingers are the number one silent killer of adhesion. Wipe the build plate with isopropyl alcohol before every print. For stubborn residue, warm soapy water and a thorough rinse work best.

Dial In Temperature

Material Bed Temp Tip
PLA+ 50-60°C Clean PEI or blue tape
PETG 70-85°C Release agent to avoid over-stick
ABS / ASA 90-110°C Enclosure + high bed heat

Choose the Right Surface

A smooth or textured PEI build plate gives excellent adhesion when warm and releases parts easily when cool. For PETG on PEI, a thin layer of glue stick prevents over-adhesion damage.

Quick Checklist

  • Level the bed after any hardware change
  • Clean with IPA before every print
  • Match bed temperature to the material
  • Use a brim for small or tall parts
