PLA remains the most common "green" filament, and for good reason. Derived from corn starch or sugarcane, it is industrially compostable under the right conditions. But here is the nuance most articles skip: home composting rarely reaches the temperatures PLA needs to break down (around 60°C sustained). Unless you have access to an industrial composting facility, your PLA scraps are not biodegrading in a meaningful timeframe.
This is where newer materials get interesting. PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) filaments have entered the consumer market and genuinely biodegrade in soil and marine environments — no industrial facility required.
