Monthly FDM Printer Maintenance: Complete Calibration Checklist
Your 3D printer is a precision machine needing regular maintenance. Skipping checks leads to layer shifts, poor adhesion, and mechanical failure.
1. Build Plate Leveling
- Heat everything: Level at printing temp (60°C PLA, 75°C PETG)
- Paper test: Slight resistance when sliding paper at all corners
- Live Z: Single-layer square — smooth, squished lines with no gaps
Use ANTINSKY PEI Smooth Build Plate for excellent grip at temp, clean release when cool.
2. Belt Tension
- Pluck test: ~100-120 Hz tone for CoreXY
- Deflection: 3-5mm at longest span
- Check for skipping or tooth wear
- Tighten 1/4 turn increments, both sides even
3. Eccentric Nut Adjustment
- Rock print head/bed — any movement means tighten
- 1/8 turn at a time until wobble disappears
- Signs of over-tightening: binding, V-wheel flats, motor whine
4. PID Tuning
M303 E0 S200 ; Hotend at 200°C M303 E0 S240 ; Hotend at 240°C M303 E-1 S60 ; Bed at 60°C M500 ; Save to EEPROM
5. Z-Axis Lubrication
- Frequency: Every 200-300 hours
- Lubricant: White lithium grease or PTFE dry lube
- Method: Thin coat, run Z up/down 3-4 times
6. Nozzle & Hotend
- Cold pull: Heat to 180°C, push filament, cool to 100°C, pull firmly
- Nozzle inspection: Replace brass every 3-6 months
- Heat sink fan: Ensure clear of dust
