Reading Layer Lines Like a Diagnosis: Resin Artifacts and What Each One Confesses

Resin printing is unforgiving in a very specific way: it does not fail loudly. It fails in patterns. A band here, a soft corner there, a surface that should be glossy and comes out chalky. Each of those artifacts is a readable message about one setting, and learning the vocabulary turns hours of blind reprinting into a few minutes of adjustment.

Start by reading the failure, not the model

Before you change anything, photograph the failed print and look at where the defect sits. Height matters enormously. A problem only at the very bottom is a base and burn-in problem. A problem that starts suddenly at one layer is likely a support failure or a resin level drop. A problem spread evenly across the whole surface is usually exposure or resin condition.

The four zones of a resin print

  • Base zone (first 0.5–1 mm): burn-in layers, plate levelling, bottom exposure.
  • Transition zone: where burn-in hands over to normal layers; blend gradual, not abrupt.
  • Body zone: normal exposure, layer height, anti-aliasing.
  • Overhang zone: supports, peel forces, drain paths.

Common artifacts and their confessions

Exposure is the dial you tune most

If you change only one variable, change exposure. Too little and the part is soft, under-cured and loses fine features. Too much and it grows: corners round, small holes close, and layer lines thicken. The honest way to set it is a test print with a range of exposures on one plate, evaluated for the smallest feature that stays crisp without the largest feature swelling.

A repeatable exposure test routine

  • Print an exposure matrix with four to six columns on one plate.
  • Wash and cure the entire plate together, exactly as you would a real part.
  • Judge on the smallest feature that reads clean, not the average.
  • Confirm with a real model that has both fine detail and a flat surface.
  • Record the final value on the resin bottle.

Resin choice sets the floor

No amount of tuning rescues incompatible chemistry. A generalist resin should expose predictably across the whole plate, hold detail, and behave the same from the first print to the last of the bottle. Starting from a consistent baseline makes every later adjustment meaningful.

Build a diagnostic habit, not a settings hoard

The makers who stop wasting resin are not the ones with the longest list of profiles. They are the ones who can look at a failure and name it.
