Resin is not a "set it and forget it" consumable. Understanding shelf life and storage is one of the easiest ways to cut failure rates and wasted resin.
Why resin goes bad
Photopolymer resin cures by cross-linking under UV light, but the photoinitiators in the formula are sensitive — they begin polymerizing slowly even under ambient room light and heat. High temperatures accelerate this, so a resin bottle left near a window or a warm motor can thicken or eventually clump. Opened bottles also admit air, dust and humidity, which can trigger contamination.

Storage best practices
- Keep it dark: store bottles in an opaque, sealed container away from sunlight.
- Control temperature: 15–25 °C is ideal; avoid heat and freezing.
- Seal tightly: wipe the neck before closing so cured resin does not lock the cap.
- Shake before use: resins separate over time; shake well (or use a mixer) so pigments and solids are uniform.
- Filter your vat: after a failed print, pour resin back through a fine mesh strainer to remove cured fragments.
Refreshing and reusing resin
It is normal to top up the vat rather than dump it after every print. Before printing, stir the vat gently to homogenize settled pigment, and check for surface debris or partially cured film. If you see a thin skin or crumbs, filter them out. For long periods without printing, pour the vat back into the bottle through a strainer and store it sealed. This prolongs usable life and keeps color accurate.
