Resin Support Strategy: Orientation, Support Settings and Clean Removal

Resin supports get less attention than exposure settings, but they dominate print success and finish quality. Poorly angled models pull straight supports, heavy supports leave scars, and traps can form wherever islands are not held properly. This guide covers the full support workflow for everyday resin printing with Standard Lite Resin and Standard Resin.

Start With Orientation, Not Supports

The best support job is the one that barely exists. Before adding any support, rotate your model so large flat surfaces tilt off the build plate and cavities face harmless directions. A 15–30° tilt reduces the peel force per layer and gives supports something solid to hold on to.

Orientation Checklist

  • Tilt flat faces to avoid suction-cup bases.
  • Point hollow openings up or out so resin can drain.
  • Avoid horizontal bridges that travel long distances unsupported.
  • Keep delicate detail faces toward the build plate in high-res areas cautiously.

Support Density and Contact Settings That Actually Work

Start with medium support density and adjust. If supports snap under their own weight, add density or switch to a thicker contact setting. If too many nubs remain after removal, lower the contact diameter.

Supporting Islands and Overhangs

Check the layer preview for floating islands — sections that start mid-air because nothing below them is printed. Add manual supports under every island. Large horizontal overhangs also need a ladder of supports every few millimetres to prevent the surface from sagging.

Removing Supports Cleanly

  1. Wash the part in isopropyl alcohol while the resin is still slightly flexible.
  2. Use flush cutters to snip supports away from the model, leaving a small margin.
  3. Cure the part fully, then sand the contact points with 400 then 800 grit.
  4. For stubborn nubs, wet-sand rather than cutting to avoid gouging.
