A Thirty-Minute Health Check That Pays for Itself
Printers rarely fail all at once — they run worse by degrees, and by the time a part fails the cause is usually a small thing that degraded over weeks. A short, regular pass over the parts that touch the plastic keeps small wear from becoming a dropped batch.
Five Checks in About Half an Hour
- Nozzle face: with the hotend at print temperature, wipe the tip with a soft brass brush. Carbon composite filaments and fluorescent grades grind through a worn nozzle — inspect the opening under light and replace when the flow pattern turns uneven.
- Build plate: a clean, dry sheet is the quiet hero of the first layer. Wash oils off with warm soapy water, avoid metal scrapers on a coated sheet, and refresh a textured or smooth PEI surface when parts either won't stick or grip too hard. - Release/print film (resin side): sweep the vat film for debris or a dulled, cloudy patch where parts release poorly. Small nicks concentrate stress — a scored spot is often cheaper to replace than the retry it causes.
- Motion: listen at the frame belts and rails on a long print. A rhythmic click or a slipping belt shows up as ghosting long before a jam. Dirt on lead screws and belts is a top cause of creeping dimensional drift.
- Filament path: tug lightly at the guide tube and spool holder. A hidden burr or a tight pinch makes extrusion stutter on taller prints — the least-suspected culprit in many "mystery" failures.
Keep a Sticky-Note Log
Note the date and what you serviced. Over three months a pattern appears: nozzles only last so many composite kilograms, a plate works for hundreds of prints before the coating thins, and some prints are simply their first warning of a loosening belt. Turning guesswork into a log turns maintenance from a chore into the cheapest insurance you own.
