Why the Base of a Resin Print Grows Proud of the Rest

You model a part with perfectly square sides, slice it, and the finished piece comes off the plate with a base that bulges a fraction of a millimetre wider than the walls above. Printers and makers call it elephant foot. It is more than cosmetic: a swollen foot can stop a component from seating in a slot or a lid from fitting its box.

Too Much Light at the Foundation

Resin prints get extra exposure on their first layers so they stick to the build plate. That extra light does not stop at the intended boundary — light bleeds sideways and over-cures the bottom few layers, pushing the footprint outward. Overdone burn-in time, an older LCD that loses contrast, or a slightly thick bottom exposure profile all make it worse.

  • Lower the burn-in exposure just enough that parts still release cleanly from the plate — more is rarely better.
  • Add a smooth wait/light-off interval so a layer settles before the lamp fires, reducing bleed.
  • Re-test after hardware ages: a profile tuned on a new panel drifts as the screen dims over months.

Read the Foot, Not the Headline

Size your calibration prints with real calipers, not by eye. A clean resin profile is one where a printed pillar's measured width sits inside a sensible tolerance of the model. If you measure a swollen base, shave exposure slightly and print again; if walls come up thread-thin, add a little back. One variable at a time, in half-step increments, until both extremes meet.
