Not Just for Show

Special effect filaments have a reputation for being gimmicky — fun for one print and then the spool sits on a shelf forever. I used to think the same until I printed a thermochromic coffee cup that actually told me when my drink was too hot, and a glow-in-the-dark light switch cover that my kids can find at night. These filaments have genuine utility. They also chew through brass nozzles like sandpaper, so let's talk about what's worth it and how to print them properly.
Glow in the Dark PLA: Surprisingly Useful
Glow filament contains strontium aluminate particles — the same stuff in high-end glow sticks — suspended in PLA. The prints charge under any light source and glow for hours. I've printed nightlights, keychains, Halloween decorations, and safety markers for workshop tools.
The abrasive particles destroy brass nozzles in roughly 500g of filament. You need a hardened steel or ruby nozzle. Print at 200-210°C, slow down to 40mm/s, and bump your line width up to 0.5mm with a 0.4mm nozzle to prevent clogs. The glow intensity depends entirely on infill — 100% infill parts glow significantly brighter than hollow ones because there's more phosphorescent material per cubic centimeter.
Thermochromic (Color-Changing) Filament
This is the coolest one. The filament changes color at a specific temperature threshold — typically around 31°C, meaning body heat triggers the change. Touch it and the color shifts. I printed coffee coasters that reveal a pattern when a hot mug sits on them, and phone cases that change color where your hands grip. The pigment is encapsulated in microspheres that don't abrade the nozzle, so standard brass is fine.
Print it cool — 190-200°C — because overheating the pigment during extrusion can permanently damage the color-change effect. Keep speeds moderate and don't use an enclosure; you want the filament to stay below its transition temperature until after the print is complete.
Metallic-Filled PLA: The Heavyweight
Copper-filled, bronze-filled, and steel-filled PLAs contain 30-60% metal powder by weight. The prints feel substantial — a 50g model in steel-filled PLA has the heft of a solid metal part. They also polish beautifully. Sand from 400 to 3000 grit and the surface develops a genuine metallic luster that you can't get from paint.
The downsides: extreme nozzle wear (hardened steel mandatory), heavy — a full spool of steel-filled PLA weighs nearly twice what standard PLA weighs, and brittle — the metal particles create stress concentration points. Don't use these for functional parts; they're for decorative objects only. Post-processing with a rock tumbler and stainless steel media gives the best finish I've found.
Nozzle Wear Is Real
After printing 750g of glow PLA on a cheap brass nozzle, the 0.4mm hole had grown to almost 0.6mm and was no longer round. Hardened steel nozzles cost a few dollars more and last indefinitely with these filaments. Consider it a mandatory upgrade. Which One Should You Try First?
Start with thermochromic if you want a conversation piece — the color-change effect genuinely surprises people. Glow-in-the-dark has the most practical uses around the house. Metallic-filled is for when you want something that feels premium. All of these are available in our filament collection. Just swap that brass nozzle first.
