Resin Layer Height and XY Resolution: Optimizing Print Quality Settings for LCD/MSLA 3D Printing

Understanding Resolution in Resin 3D Printing

When discussing resin 3D printer resolution, two factors determine the final quality of your prints: layer height (Z-axis resolution) and XY resolution (pixel or light engine precision). While many users focus exclusively on layer height, the interplay between both axes creates the total print fidelity. This guide explains how to optimize both parameters with ANTINSKY resins for the best possible results.

Layer Height: The Z-Axis Factor

Layer height in resin printing refers to the thickness of each cured layer, typically ranging from 10 microns (0.01mm) to 100 microns (0.1mm). The thinner the layer, the smoother the surface and the finer the vertical detail. Here is how different layer heights perform:

Layer Height Best For Trade-off
10-25 um Jewelry, dental models, miniatures Long print times, more peel forces
30-50 um General purpose, prototypes Balanced quality and speed
50-100 um Functional parts, large objects Visible layer lines, faster prints

ANTINSKY Standard Lite Resin performs exceptionally well across all layer heights, offering excellent flow characteristics that prevent delamination even at 20um layers. For high-detail work, we recommend 30um as the sweet spot between quality and print time.

XY Resolution: The Monitor of Your Printer

XY resolution is determined by your printer's LCD screen or DLP projector. A higher resolution screen (e.g., 8K vs 4K on the same build area) produces smaller pixel sizes, enabling finer XY detail. For example, a 10-inch 8K screen delivers approximately 32um pixel size, while a 4K screen of the same size delivers roughly 64um. The smaller the pixel size, the sharper edges and finer features your resin prints can achieve.

However, XY resolution is a hardware limitation — you cannot improve it through software settings alone. What you can control is orientation: tilting your model 15-30 degrees on the build platform minimizes visible pixel stepping on sloping surfaces, effectively making the most of your printer's native XY resolution.

Combining Both Axes for Maximum Quality

  • For miniature gaming figures: Use 25-30um layers with a 2.5s exposure (for ANTINSKY Standard resin) on an 8K printer. Orient figures at 20 degrees to minimize support marks on visible faces.
  • For engineering prototypes: 50um layers provide a good balance of speed and strength. Use ANTINSKY ABS-Like Resin for its improved impact resistance and dimensional accuracy at thicker layers.
  • For jewelry and dental models: 20um layers with 1.8-2.2s exposure. Post-cure thoroughly to achieve maximum translucency and detail retention.

Exposure Time vs Resolution

One common mistake is over-exposing to compensate for layer height changes. The correct approach is to adjust exposure time based on the resin formula, not the layer height. A 20um layer of ANTINSKY Standard Lite Resin might need only 1.8-2.2 seconds, while a 50um layer of the same resin might need 2.5-3.0 seconds. Always refer to the resin manufacturer's exposure chart — available on the ANTINSKY 3D Printing Parameters page via QR code on each bottle — as a starting point, then fine-tune with calibration tests.
