Anycubic's Photon Mono line has been the benchmark for consumer-grade resin printing for years, and the gap between the 8K and 12K models is the most common upgrade question we hear from new buyers. Marketing materials make it sound like a generational leap. The honest answer is that the difference is real but smaller than the spec sheet suggests, and the right pick depends entirely on what you print and how much post-processing you do.
What the Numbers Actually Mean

The "8K" and "12K" labels refer to the LCD panel resolution. 8K on a 6.6-inch screen works out to roughly 28 microns of XY pixel size. 12K on a slightly larger 7-inch screen gets to around 19 microns. On paper, that is a 30 percent improvement in pixel density. In practice, the minimum feature size you can resolve is limited by more than just pixel pitch: light bleed, the size of the UV LED array, the optical stack, the resin chemistry, and the cure depth all blur the theoretical resolution. Most published 12K prints look sharper than 8K prints, but the difference is subtle at typical print sizes and almost invisible on parts larger than 50 mm.
Where the 12K Wins
The 12K screen is most valuable for miniature painters, jewelry designers, and dental labs that print very small details at very small scales. If you print 28 mm tabletop figures with fine text or facial details, the extra resolution shows up as smoother skin, crisper hair strands, and finer engraving. It also helps with thin walls and small holes that often fail to cure properly on lower-resolution screens. For these users, the upgrade is worth it.
Where the 8K Is Just Fine
For functional parts, large miniatures, cosplay props, and standard tabletop minis at 32 mm and above, the 8K is more than enough. Most of the visible "resolution" in a printed figure actually comes from the Z layer height and the slicing anti-aliasing, not the XY pixels. A 0.05 mm layer height on an 8K printer beats a 0.05 mm layer height on a 12K printer by a wider margin than the screen resolution difference matters at all.
The Often-Ignored Factor: Slicer and Resin
The bigger improvements in modern resin printing come from the slicer, not the screen. Anti-aliasing algorithms, light-blur compensation, and pixel-shift exposure all do more for print quality than bumping from 8K to 12K. Pair the printer with a good resin (clean pigments, low shrinkage, reliable cure profile) and you will get excellent results on either screen. Who Should Buy What
Buy the 12K if you print highly detailed miniatures, jewelry masters, or dental models where every fraction of a millimeter counts. Buy the 8K if you print functional parts, cosplay pieces, larger minis, or general-purpose prototypes. The money you save on the 8K will buy a lot of resin, and resin cost is a far bigger long-term expense than the printer itself. If you are starting out, the 8K is the smarter entry point.
