Choose the Right Surface
The build surface is where your print either sticks or fails. Different materials want different surfaces, and the right plate can eliminate adhesives, glue sticks and frustration. Here's how the main options compare.
PEI: The Modern Default
Polyetherimide (PEI) gives excellent adhesion when warm and releases parts easily when cool. Smooth PEI leaves a glossy base finish, while textured PEI hides minor surface imperfections and grips PETG well. A quality PEI build plate is the best all-rounder for most printers.

Care and Maintenance
- Wipe with isopropyl alcohol before every print
- Wash with warm soapy water for stubborn residue
- Let the plate cool before flexing parts free
- Avoid scraping that scratches the coating
Match the Surface to the Material
PLA and PETG stick beautifully to clean PEI. For PETG on smooth PEI, a thin release agent like glue stick prevents over-adhesion damage. ABS and ASA want higher bed heat plus an enclosure, and textured PEI helps them hold through long prints.
The right plate, kept clean and matched to your filament, is the simplest reliability upgrade you can make.
