Resin printing rewards patience. The printer does the heavy lifting, but the difference between a print that looks like a toy and one that looks like a professional product is almost entirely in the post-processing. Once you build a clean, repeatable workflow, you will produce parts that rival injection-molded plastic for surface quality, and you will spend far less time fixing errors.
Step One: The Pre-Wash

As soon as the print comes off the build plate, drop it into a bath of isopropyl alcohol or a purpose-made resin cleaner. Let it soak for 3 to 5 minutes, then agitate gently with a soft brush. The goal is to dissolve uncured resin on the surface before it can harden. For fine details, an ultrasonic cleaner is a worthwhile upgrade. It pulls resin out of crevices that a brush cannot reach.
Two-bath washing is the secret weapon of high-end shops. The first bath dissolves the bulk of the resin, the second bath does the final clean. Keep the second bath cleaner than you think you need to: a cloudy second bath redeposits resin on the print and ruins the detail. Change the baths on a schedule, not by feel.
Step Two: Drying Before Cure
Alcohol trapped in the details of a print will turn white and chalky if you cure it while still wet. After washing, let the print air dry for at least 30 minutes, or use a low-heat drying box at 40 degrees Celsius. Compressed air is a great way to blow alcohol out of deep recesses before drying.
Step Three: UV Curing
Most resins need 2 to 5 minutes of UV exposure to reach full mechanical strength. A purpose-built curing chamber with a 405-nanometer UV light array is the most consistent option. Sunlight works in a pinch, but it is unpredictable. A 60-watt equivalent UV LED flood light, mounted 15 centimeters above the print, gives a reliable cure in about 3 minutes for standard resins.
For parts that need flexibility or impact resistance, under-cure slightly and then test. Over-curing makes resin brittle, and brittle parts fail at the layer lines. For tough and ABS-like resins, follow the manufacturer's recommendation, but always test with a controlled sample before committing to a full production run.
Step Four: Support Removal and Sanding
Remove supports before sanding to avoid cracking the print. Use flush-cutters and pull the support perpendicular to the support contact, not at an angle. A small touch from a hobby knife cleans the remaining nib.
Wet sanding gives the smoothest results. Start with 400-grit sandpaper to knock down the support marks and any layer lines visible at the surface, then move through 800, 1500, and finally 2000 grit. Keep the sandpaper and the print wet, and rinse frequently. A coat of filler primer between grits fills micro-scratches and produces a finish that looks painted straight off the printer.
Step Five: Painting and Sealing
Resin prints benefit from a primer coat before any color. A light gray or white primer evens out the surface and gives acrylic paint something to grip. Apply paint in thin layers, not heavy coats. Each thin coat dries faster, adheres better, and preserves the fine details you worked so hard to print.
For a final protective layer, spray a clear matte or gloss coat once the paint is fully cured. The clear coat protects the paint, deepens the color, and unifies the finish.
