Matte, Silk or Glossy? Picking the Right ANTINSKY PLA Finish for Every Project

One PLA, Three Personalities

PLA is the most forgiving filament a maker can load, but "PLA" is no longer a single material. Look across any desktop-printing supply shelf and you will find standard PLA, PLA+, matte PLA and glossy silk PLA — all wound into 1.75 mm spools that look similar from the side but print with very different surfaces. All three share the 1.75 mm diameter, easy low-temperature printing and low-warp behavior that make PLA the entry point to FDM. The differences live in the surface chemistry and the layer finish they produce.

Glossy PLA+: The Reliable Workhorse

The standard ANTINSKY PLA+ Filament 1.75 mm is a gloss finish engineered for consistency: clean diameter, stable extrusion and reliable bed adhesion. For brackets, jigs, cable clips and anything that will be painted or hidden, glossy is the practical choice.

Where Glossy Wins

  • Best inter-layer adhesion and impact resistance of the three
  • Very consistent diameter for high-speed printing
  • Less stringing at the same settings as silk

Watch Out For

  • Layer lines are clearly visible under direct light
  • Fingerprints show on light colors

Matte PLA: The Photographer's Pick

ANTINSKY Matte PLA buries layer lines under its soft, non-reflective surface. What looks like post-processing is actually printed that way. For figures, tabletop minis, cosplay props and display pieces, matte dramatically hides the seams and ridges that glossy PLA reveals.

Matte Cons

  • Slightly softer; less suited to load-bearing parts
  • Small differences in extrusion show a little more

Silk PLA: The Shining Star

ANTINSKY Silk PLA produces a glossy, shimmering finish that looks cast or metallic. Vases, trophies, awards and any display piece benefit from its eye-catching sheen.

Silk Tips

  • Print a little slower (around 40–60 mm/s) to keep the shine uniform
  • Slightly raise temperature ~5–10 °C to reduce filament breakage at the drive gear
  • Keep the spool dry — moist silk strings more than glossy

Finishing and Following Up

Whichever surface you choose, the same first steps apply: dry the spool in a FilaBox drying box if it has been open for a while, print a clean first layer on a PEI build plate, and tune temperature before committing to a long job.

  3. Dry, level, and run a small temperature test part
