Multi-Material 3D Printing Without the AMS: Practical Workarounds for Single-Extruder Printers

The Bambu Lab AMS, Prusa MMU, and similar multi-material systems are amazing when they work, but they add cost, complexity, and a long list of things that can go wrong. For most home users, a well-tuned single-extruder printer is still the most reliable option. That does not mean you are stuck with single-color prints. There are several practical techniques that let you do multi-material and multi-color work without any AMS at all.

The Manual Filament Change

The simplest approach is the manual pause. Slice the print, then add a M600 filament change command at the layer where you want to swap colors. Most modern slicers, including Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, and OrcaSlicer, support this. The printer pauses, parks the head, and waits for you to load a new filament. The downside is that you have to be present for the swap, but for prints that take a few hours, that is rarely a problem.

The trick to a clean manual change is the purge. When you load the new filament, keep extruding until the new color comes out clean. Most slicers let you set a purge volume: 50 to 100 millimeters is usually enough for PLA. If you are switching from a dark color to a light color, purge more. The wasted filament is a small price for a clean transition.

Two-Color Prints with No Pause

For prints where you only need two colors, the simplest approach is to use the prime tower and a slicer that supports dual-extruder simulation. OrcaSlicer has a single-extruder multi-material mode that handles the purge and color transitions automatically. You design the print with two extruders in mind, and the slicer takes care of the rest. It still requires you to be present, but the math is done for you.

Painting Instead of Filament Swaps

For prints that need many colors, painting is often faster and cheaper than filament swaps. Print the part in a single color, then use acrylic paints, airbrush, or filler primer to add color. The post-processing takes a couple of hours, but you can achieve a level of detail that no filament swap can match, including gradients, transparent layers, and metallic finishes.

Painting also gives you a more consistent result. Filament swaps introduce a small color change at the transition layer, which is often visible on curved surfaces. Paint covers that transition cleanly.

Dissolvable Supports and Multi-Material Tricks

For engineering prints that genuinely need a different material for supports, PVA and BVOH dissolvable filaments are the answer. Print the model in your primary material, supports in PVA, then soak the print in water for a few hours. The supports dissolve, leaving the model clean. This is the same trick that dual-extruder printers use, but on a single extruder with a manual filament change at the start of the print.

Keep in mind that PVA is moisture-sensitive, so store it in a dry box with active humidity control. Print it at 200 to 210 degrees Celsius with a slow first layer, and it will bond well to PLA and PETG.

When the AMS Is Worth It

If you print multi-color models regularly, the AMS is worth the investment. It eliminates the manual swap, runs the print unattended, and handles the purge automatically. For occasional multi-color work, the manual change and the painting workflow are both faster, cheaper, and more reliable than maintaining a complex multi-material system.
