Why Small Features Fail Before Big Ones Do

Every FDM printer can extrude a wall, but printing a genuinely thin wall, a crisp fine detail or a hollow vase is where slicing knowledge separates good prints from great ones. Thin structures amplify every error: one slightly under-extruded pass, and a 0.8 mm wall turns wispy. Understanding line width, vase mode and minimum feature size is the key to printing fine, reliable parts.

Line Width: The Building Block You Can Bend

Line width rarely needs to equal the nozzle diameter. Most slicers let you push line width to about 120–130% of the nozzle for perimeters — a thicker track that improves wall strength and hides under-extrusion — or drop it lower for fine details.

Vase Mode: One Continuous Wall

Spiralize / vase mode prints the whole model as a single continuous perimeter — no infill, no seams. It produces stunning smooth vases and shells, but only works for parts that are happy as thin-walled vessels.

When Vase Mode Shines

  • Vases, planters, lampshades, wall art
  • Parts that want smooth, seamless outer surfaces
  • Fast decorative prints

When to Skip It

  • Anything load-bearing (single wall is weak)
  • Tall thin parts that flex or wobble
  • Models with wide flat tops that need bridging

Minimum Feature Size: Know the Floor

As a rule, the smallest printable wall is roughly 2 times the wall line width (a single wall needs interior + exterior of one track). Features thinner than that will either vanish or smear. For crisp text and ribs, aim for detail larger than 0.4 mm on a common nozzle, and consider a finer 0.2 mm nozzle for very small type.
