Ask a resin printer why a big flat part delaminated from the middle of the plate, and nine times out of ten the answer is suction. As LCD printers grow bigger, the peel force that separates each new layer from the film scales with cross-sectional area. Orientation — not just exposure — decides whether a large model prints clean or dies halfway through an expensive run.

The physics you cannot defeat, only steer

After each exposure, the build plate lifts and the newest solid layer must separate from the soft release film at the bottom of the vat. The wider that footprint, the harder the vacuum pulls. Three problems result:

  • Delamination — the model tears itself at its weakest layer instead of letting go of the film.
  • Film and vat stress — repeated heavy pulls fatigue the release liner and its edge seal.
  • Layer shifting — the model flexes and snaps back, misregistering the next layer.

A model face printed dead-flat on the bed presents a huge area in a single peel instant. Tilt the model so large faces enter and exit the peel gradually — roughly 30-45° for decorative and most organic parts. A tabletop printed flat is the worst case; angled the same way, a thin sliver peels first and the rest follows like a zipper.

Hollow big parts correctly

Solid cubes and thick bases multiply resin cost and suction at once. On large prints even an affordable resin like Standard Lite gets expensive when spent on internal mass. Hollow the model and keep a sensible wall — about 2-3 mm for decorative, more for handled parts — and add drainage holes:

  • Place at least two holes (one near the low point) so resin flows out during the lift.
  • Orient drainage openings toward the build plate so they act as the outflow vent.
  • Avoid completely closed cavities that create pressure pockets.

Let the film and resin help you

A healthy low-stick release film lets every layer separate with a gentler snap, so replace an aged or cloudy nFEP/PFA liner before big jobs. Keep the resin warm and well mixed: cold, thick resin stiffens the peel, while settled or unmixed vats cause variation. Stir gently and let bubbles rise if you notice streaks in a large flat model.
