Resin (LCD/MSLA) printing is beautifully detailed, but supports are where most beginners lose parts. Understanding when supports are needed, where they should go and how to tune contact settings is the difference between a clean miniature and a broken, half-printed mess. Why Resin Parts Need Supports
In LCD printing the part is pulled off the FEP film every layer. Large flat areas create strong suction forces that can peel the layer, warp the model or even detach it from the build plate. Supports anchor the part, let resin circulate, and carry away peel stress.
When Do You Need Supports?
- Any overhang steeper than ~45° that would otherwise print in mid-air.
- Islands — model geometry that has no connection to the plate or to an existing supported layer.
- Large flat underside surfaces that would create excessive suction.
Optimising Model Orientation
Before adding supports, tilt the part ~30-45° on the build plate. This does three things:

Support Settings That Matter
- Support type: Light supports for detail areas, medium/ heavy supports for large or load-bearing zones.
- Support tip / contact diameter: Smaller tips (0.3-0.4 mm) leave cleaner marks; larger tips hold better.
- Support penetration into the part: Keep it shallow (0.1-0.3 mm) so removal is easy and scarring minimal.
- Drainage holes: For hollow parts, add holes so uncured resin can escape and suction is reduced.
Removal and Clean-Up
After printing, wash the part in isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated cleaner, cure it, then remove supports with flush cutters. A quick sand of the contact points finishes the surface. With good settings, supports come off without gouging the detail.
