When CF, High-Speed and Flame-Retardant Grades Earn Their Price
Every September the material shelf grows a little more crowded. Carbon-fibre composites, high-flow engineering grades and specialty flame-retardant filaments keep edging into the hobby-to-pro gap. The CF Question: Stiffness, Warp and a Worn Nozzle
Short-carbon-fibre filaments such as Polymaker PET-CF17 (Fiberon) (PET-CF17) trade noticeably higher stiffness and lower warping for two real costs: they demand hardened nozzles, and their surface is matte and slightly textured. That trade pays off for brackets, jigs and anything that must hold geometry under load. If your parts are decorative or low-stress, the premium rarely shows.

High-Speed and the Floor It Raises
Fast filaments are spreading to engineering polymers, not just PLA. As machines move quicker, they ask more of a spool: stable temperature and extrusion at higher volumetric rates. A clean, dry, dimensionally-consistent roll matters more at 300 mm/s than it did at 60. In practice that makes filament quality the bottleneck before speed — a reliable everyday grade still beats a fancy one that runs wet.
Flame-Retardant and ESD: Niche, but Real
Two grades earn their price only when the application demands them. Electrostatic-dissipative filament (Polymaker PETG-ESD (Fiberon) (PETG-ESD)) matters around sensitive electronics and powder handling. Flame-retardant grades are worth it where a part must resist ignition risk in an enclosure or a test rig. For the other 95% of desktop parts, a good engineering or everyday filament is the honest answer.
