Two Small Flaws That Ruin an Otherwise Perfect Part

Even a perfectly dimensioned print can look amateur if it has a line of blobs down one side (the Z-seam) or wisps of plastic between features (stringing). Both are fixable with two ideas: where the layer starts and how the nozzle behaves between moves. Here is how to tame them across the four filaments most makers use.

What the Z-Seam Is

Every layer starts and ends at a single point, and the printer must raise the nozzle there — that pause can leave a small defect. The trick is to place that seam somewhere it won't be noticed and, on single-wall parts, reduce it with coasting and wipe settings.

Fighting Stringing, Material by Material

  • PLA+ — strings when nozzle too hot or retraction too short; drop temp 5–10°C and test.
  • PETG — classic culprit because it loves moisture; a dry spool often halves stringing instantly.
  • ABS — prefers draft-free heat; retraction tuning plus a stable chamber works wonders.
  • TPU — soft filament must retract gently; use slower speed and a slightly longer distance set in the profile (see ANTINSKY TPU 85A).

Three Slicer Moves That Help Every Material

  1. Wipe / coast — reduce residual pressure at the nozzle tip before travel.
  2. Travel routing — let the slicer avoid crossing open spaces to hide strings far from view.
  3. Z-hop — a tiny lift clears surface contact but set it low to avoid a new seam.

Keep the Spool at Its Best
