FDM Filament Selection Guide: Choosing the Right Material for Every Project

With dozens of filament types available, choosing the right material can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down the four most common FDM filaments with practical advice on when to use each, ideal settings, and common pitfalls.

PLA+ : The Foundation

Best for: Decorative prints, prototypes, toys, education

PLA prints easily, requires no enclosure, produces minimal odor, and delivers excellent surface finish. ANTINSKY PLA+ Filament is available in 46 colors with improved layer adhesion.

Settings: Nozzle 190–220°C, Bed 40–60°C, Fan 100%

Specialty PLAs: PLA Matte (32 colors), Silk PLA, Dual Silk, PLA+ HS (300+ mm/s), UV Color Change, Luminous Rainbow

PETG: The Workhorse

Best for: Mechanical parts, outdoor use, functional prototypes

PETG combines strength and heat resistance beyond PLA with minimal warping. ANTINSKY PETG offers excellent layer adhesion. Also: PETG Matte, PETG-CF.

Settings: Nozzle 230–250°C, Bed 70–80°C, Fan 20–50%, slower speed than PLA

ABS: Engineering-Grade

Best for: Automotive, high-temp applications, durable tooling

ABS offers Tg ~105°C and the best impact strength. Requires an enclosure. ANTINSKY ABS provides good strength-to-price.

Settings: Nozzle 240–260°C, Bed 90–110°C, Chamber 40–50°C, Fan 0–15%. Use brim, ensure ventilation.

TPU: Flexible

Best for: Phone cases, gaskets, seals, grips

TPU 85A is softer; TPU 95A stiffer and easier to print. Direct drive recommended.

Settings: Nozzle 220–250°C, Bed 40–60°C, Speed 15–40 mm/s. Reduce retraction.
