Resin printing gives you incredible detail, but it also comes with a specific set of failure modes that FDM users rarely see. The good news: almost all of them have clear causes and quick fixes. Here are the three most common and how to solve them.
1. Layer Splitting
When your print separates along the layer lines, the usual culprits are insufficient exposure time or low resin temperature. Under-cured layers do not bond strongly to the layer below, so they peel apart as the print grows.
- Increase exposure time by 0.2–0.5s and re-test with a calibration matrix.
- Keep resin between 22–28°C; cold resin is thicker and cures slower.
- Check that your light source is clean and the LCD is not degrading.
2. Warping and Curling
Warping usually appears on flat surfaces and thin edges. It happens when one side of the print shrinks more than the other, often due to uneven curing or poor orientation.
- Re-orient the part so flat faces are not parallel to the build plate.
- Add light supports to long unsupported edges to reduce peel stress.
- Consider a low-shrinkage resin for dimension-critical parts.
3. Parts Pulling Off the Build Plate
This is often a first-layer adhesion problem. The first layer is the foundation of the entire print, so if it fails, everything fails.
- Increase bottom-layer exposure and bottom-layer count.
- Re-level the build plate and clean it with IPA — leftover residue is a common cause.
- Lightly scuff the plate with fine sandpaper if it has gone glossy from use.
