Why Your First Layer Peels: Contamination, Cleaners and the Micro-Texture of Your Build Plate

You check bed level, verify temperature, set the right first-layer height — and the part still curls or lets go half-way through. Time after time, the real culprit is a build plate that has lost its grip. Here is what coats your plate, how to clean it properly, and how to bring a worn surface back to life.

Myth: Higher Bed Temperature Fixes Everything

Raising the bed temperature masks one symptom and creates others — elephant's foot on PLA, more warping risk on PETG, and unnecessary energy use. Before changing temperature, rule out the cheaper fix: the plate itself. A clean plate grips far better than a hot, greasy one.

What Actually Contaminates Your Plate

  • Natural skin oils from touching the surface to remove a part
  • Old glue-stick residue that has baked into a waxy film
  • Powdered filament dust and tiny chips left after a failed print
  • Spray adhesives that never fully wash away
  • Dust and airborne grease that settles when the printer sits idle

Any of these forms a microscopic barrier between the plastic and the textured surface, which is exactly what you pull against during a print.

How to Clean PEI the Right Way

  1. Remove the plate and take it to a sink — never wipe while it is hot and grippy to a hot print.
  2. Warm soapy water is the first choice: mild dish soap strips skin oils better than alcohol.
  3. Rinse thoroughly — soap film is itself a contaminant.
  4. Dry completely with a lint-free cloth or paper towel before reinstalling.
  5. Between washings, an isopropyl wipe keeps day-to-day grip up, but it breaks down old glue worse than soap.

Why alcohol alone fails

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) dissolves oils but leaves glue-stick wax and older residues behind. Soap-removal every so often is the step most people skip, and it is the one that restores the "sticky" feel of a new plate. Make soap a weekly habit and IPA a between-prints habit.

Restoring a Tired Plate

After years of use, PEI loses its micro-texture and parts stop gripping. Before replacing it, try:

  • Deep soap-and-scrub with a soft scrub pad to lift baked-in residue.
  • A very light sanding (1200–2000 grit, wet) to roughen a glossy, slippery patch.
  • Rotate your usage so one spot does not carry every print.
  • For stubborn filaments like PETG, use a textured plate or a thin glue release rather than over-heating.

If nothing restores grip, a fresh plate is cheap insurance against a failed print.

When a plate is truly done

A plate is physically finished when the texture is smooth across a large area and cleaning no longer changes behaviour. At that point sanding can do more harm than good — a well-worn textured plate often cannot be brought back. Compare the cost of a replacement against the time you lose restarting prints, and replace it before a failed part wastes ten hours and a full spool.

Keep the whole hot path happy

  • A worn nozzle changes extrusion width and makes a clean plate look like the problem.
  • Check for a clog or worn tip whenever peeling appears suddenly after months of good prints.
  • Replace a brass nozzle after heavy use; a hardened or high-flow nozzle lasts far longer on abrasive materials.
