The build plate is the most undervalued part of an FDM printer. A tired, greasy or flaking PEI sheet costs you first-layer failures, warped parts and wasted filament – and most of it is completely preventable. Why PEI Wears Out
PEI (polyetherimide) sheets are prized because they grip well when hot and release when cool. But they are not indestructible. Three things degrade them:

- Surface wear – fine scratches and flaking at the contact points.
